You Know It, So Why Aren't You Doing It? Let's Make Things Happen!

Let’s face it, your shelves are probably packed with self-help books, your LinkedIn feed is overflowing with inspirational quotes, and your head is buzzing with life hacks from top performers.

But be honest with yourself: how much of this advice are you putting into practice? If you’re stuck in the mode of observing rather than acting, it’s high time you switched gears from soaking up knowledge to actually squeezing out the benefits.

The Real Magic Happens When You Step Up

While knowing things feels good, doing them—that’s where the real magic happens for you.

Think about it: everyone can tell you how important it is to meditate, but how many people actually make this part of their life? Even though the science behind the benefits is indisputable.

You read about the power of a morning routine, yet you hit snooze until the last possible second. It’s easy to nod along with advice; it’s revolutionary to live by it.

So why do you get stuck in this cycle of passive consumption? It's because doing is harder than consuming.

But here’s the juicy part: the smallest actions are often the most transformative. Let’s simplify how you can turn your knowledge into action.

Simple Steps to Kickstart Your Journey from Knowing to Doing

  1. Clearly Define Your Goals: You’ve probably heard this a million times, but are you practising it? Take a pen and write down what you want to achieve. Make it as specific as you can—no more vague aspirations. Next, write down ‘why’ it’s important (this is the gold and will level up your motivation).

  2. Identify Key Behaviours: List the behaviours that will directly contribute to your goals. If you want to ‘be more focused’, one behaviour might be to practice holding your attention on one object for 30 seconds. Each time your mind wanders, bring your attention back to the object.

  3. Incorporate These Behaviours Into Your Daily Routine: Embed these actions into your daily life. After you sit down to start work in the morning, afternoon or after a meeting, do this key behaviour to get you in the zone. If your goal is to build your network, then perhaps you send out one networking email first thing in the morning or read industry news during your coffee break.

Overcoming the Giants: Procrastination and Lack of Motivation

You all face these beasts. Here’s a practical way for you to slay them:

  • Start Small: Break down intimidating tasks into tiny, manageable actions. Want to write a book? Start with one paragraph a day.

  • Stay Consistent: Consistency beats intensity. Keep at those small tasks, and celebrate the tiny victories—they add up!

  • Scale Gradually: As these small actions become habitual, gradually increase their scope and challenge.

Just Reading? No, Let’s Start Doing!

Instead of just agreeing with this or moving on with your day, take a moment…

What can you do right now, in the next 5 minutes, to move closer to your goals? Do that. Repeat tomorrow.

And remember, every time you convert knowledge into action, you're not just ticking off a task—you're building a powerhouse of habits that will propel you towards your dreams. So, cut the fluff and get down to business. This is where the real magic happens, and it's waiting for you to grab it!

Want to get clarity each day. Try these simple chatGPT Prompts!

Note: This uses chatGPT 4

Prompt 1: Study my tasks for today and let me know when you are done. Wait for further instructions.

  • [add your tasks here] e.g.

  • Write 10 emails to potential customers (30 min), low effort

  • Create 2 social media posts (1 hr), medium effort

  • Clean up my desk (15 min), low effort

  • Review my VAT return (30 min), high effort

  • Continue reading my book on productivity (1 hr), medium effort

  • Make 3 sales calls (90 min), high effort

Prompt 2: Study my calendar for today and let me know when you are done. Wait for further instructions:

  • Prime for the day: 9am

  • Jane: 10am - 10:30am

  • Team meeting: 1pm-2pm

  • John: 3:30pm - 4:30pm

  • Finish: 6pm

Prompt 3: Streamline my day:

Instructions

  • No opening paragraph. Create a table that illustrates task categorization and schedule.

  • Use the columns: Time, Task, Impact/Effort, Summary.

  • Give each task a score for impact and effort (1 is low, 5 is high)

  • My energy and focus are highest between 9am-12pm and 4pm - 6pm

  • Lunch is at 1pm for 30 minutes and schedule 2×15 minute breaks during the day

  • Pay attention to the estimated times of each task, don’t overestimate

  • Be mindful that the ideal deep work time is 30-90 minutes long

  • Suggest a time where tasks can be done based on priority and energy levels

  • In the summary column, share your reasoning on the order of each task (keep it short, under 20 words) based on your impact/effort score

  • Make sure the tasks are in chronological order.

  • Include calendar meetings in the schedule.

  • Stop here.

You should get something like this:

Daily Streamlined Schedule Created by ChatGPT

Now, the real value here isn’t necessarily following what chatGPT gives you verbatim; it’s the fact that it will quickly allow you to either agree or disagree with the priority and timings of the tasks.

In turn, creating greater clarity for your day.

  • Writing your list of tasks and calendar events takes about 3-5 minutes

  • Pasting your prompts into chatGPT takes about 60 seconds

  • Together they can act as a great primer for your day

Final thought: play around with your prompts. Think of this activity more along the lines of having a conversation with a colleague on the best way to streamline your day, and then ‘you’ decide what works best for you.

You’ll start your day focused with higher levels of clarity.
