Why you’re getting work/life balance wrong

OR How to find balance in your life

It’s time for a balance check, read on…

While my focus over the last 30 years has on developing strategies for improved memory, focus, productivity and wellbeing, for 15 years I lived my life as a professional actor, singer and dancer.

And one thing you learn as a dancer is balance! 🕺

Here’s the thing that most people don’t recognise:

“Balance isn’t static” ⚡️

➡️ Balance is being able to consistently make adjustments

I used to be able to to do 9 pirouettes (spin around 9 times on a single leg). In order to do this you have to make micro adjustments otherwise you fall over and stack it. 💥

But in order to get to 9, you have to 'stack it' a lot! 👀

“Finding balance in your life is no different” ⚡️

Think 3 spheres:

➡️ Self: your personal growth journey, your wellbeing

➡️ Work/Business: does what it says on the tin

➡️ Relationships: partner, family, friends, colleagues

As you can see these all cross over in a ‘life’ Venn Diagram

Like pirouetting, if you want to find ‘real’ balance you have to:

➡️ Become aware when you're neglecting one or more of these spheres

➡️ Make adjustments, sometimes small and other times significant

➡️ Sometimes we stack it, so we need to brush ourselves off and go again

Finding a balance between your work, your self-growth and your relationships is more than possible.

Take a Weekly Balance Check…

Do this in under 30 seconds

Rate each sphere of your life on a scale of 1-10. Ten the best it could possible be and one, the other thing…

  • What number is your work/business?

  • What number is your relationships?

  • What number is your self/wellbeing?

This quick balance check give you an insight into which sphere of your life may be lacking and a signal to re-balance your attention.

Ask a Primer Question

Now it’s time to take an action that addresses this balancing act, by asking a primer question.

Let’s say your ‘self’ sphere was at a 4… Then ask yourself:

What small action can I take today, that will start moving my [self sphere] from a 4 to 5?

Create a Prime Focus

Write down both the question and the answer and decide if this is something you want to commit to.

You’ve now got a choice…
